世界中の先進国では高齢化が進んでいますが、高齢化が進むほど食べやすい食べ物が好まれます。その点でも麺はパンと比べて食べやすく、咀嚼能力の落ちた高齢者にも優しい食べ物であるといえます。また、欧州では動物愛護運動からビーガン（ヴィーガン）が広まっていることもあり麺という穀物食の需要は高まると考えられます。
なお世界中の爆発的に増加する人口を支えるには、肉の多食では無理があり、どうしても栽培が簡単でより多くの人口を支えることのできる穀物食の必要性は更に高まると考えられます。
